Age Group Information
Eligibility
Swim club members ages 4 to 18 are eligible to swim and dive for the PPSL. Only children that have earned their YMCA Green Band may participate on the swim and/or dive teams. Green band tests are administered by WSC lifeguards and align with YMCA Water Safety Guidelines. Older swimmers that have completed their first year of college are no longer eligible to complete (but are welcome to apply for a job on the coaching staff!)
Age Groups
Age groups for swim and dive are determined by how old your child is on June 1 and grouped as:
- 8 & Unders (includes Jr. Swordfish)
- 9 & 10
- 11 & 12
- 13 & 14
- 15 to 18
8 & Under and Jr Swordfish Swim Screening
All 8 and under registered swimmers will participate in a screening during the first week of practice for placement in a practice group. During the screening, swimmers will be evaluated on 3 skills required for 8 and Unders:
- swim 25 meters freestyle unassisted (no hanging on lane lines or wall)
- swim 25 meters on back unassisted
- tread water for 1 minute
Swimmers who have their green band but are not able to meet the above criteria will practice with Jr Swordfish. The focus for these newer swimmers is on having fun, getting used to participating in swim practice, and building endurance. A parent or guardian must be at the pool during practice.
